Meet Northern Lights Theatre

We are a new theatre group from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and we're excited to bring The Sculpture to Ed Fringe in 2025. The Sculpture is the first show from our group, detailing the true and tragic story of Molly O'Day, one of the earliest Hollywood actresses to undergo weight loss surgery. Playing at Just the Tonic @ The Caves (The Fancy Room) from July 31st to August 11th, this show is not one you'd want to miss!

Molly O'Day and The Sculpture

Molly O'Day was an early Hollywood film actress in the late 1920's and early 1930's. Reaching stardom at the early age of 16, Molly was thrust into the critical eye of the Hollywood press. After a series of articles of her body and weight damaged Molly's career and her self-image, she resorted to the surgeons knife, becoming one of the first major celebrities to undergo weight loss surgery.

The Sculpture examines Molly's meteoric rise to fame and her very abrupt fall from grace through the lens of the media circus. The play uses a mixture of elements of vaudeville and dark comedy to emulate the highs, lows and pressures of Molly's career. Featuring an original score and a number of musical numbers, the glitz and glamour of early Hollywood is put into stark contrast with the real-life commodification Molly experienced from the industry in this true and tragic tale.
